Nutec is the modern way to build traditional wendy houses. But what is it and why is it so great for building Wendy houses out of?

What is Nutec?

Nutec is actually a trade name for a type of fiber cement board, but has become the generic term for any building clad with boards made by mixing Portland cement with fibers. The resulting boards are:

• long lasting
• impervious to rot
• pest resistant (rats can't stand it, bugs can't penetrate it)
• very low maintenance
• UV resistant
• excellent value for money
• easy to paint with any outdoor wall paint

How we use fiber cement boards on Wendy houses

As with any Wendy house, a Nutec Wendy house starts with a good quality timber frame. Our timber is sourced locally and we either use treated pine or a locally available hardwood such as saligna (gum).

The fiber cement is only the material used to clad the frame and create a weatherproof barrier. It it only a cladding, and provides no structural strength, but there is no better material on the market to cope with harsh Cape Town weather.

Flat Panels or planks

Fiber cement boards are available in two different types:

• Flat panel- the frame is clad using large sheets of fiber cement board. This is a lower cost product and easier to install so will slightly reduce the overall cost of your unit.
• Planked- a traditional looking finish in which narrow fiber cement planks are overlapped so that water drips off each plank. It is even possible to use boards that are imprinted with a wood grain effect. The cost of your build will be slightly higher than for flat panels.
